How do I ... ?

Install the E-Write for Word demo version

You will receive the instructions when you sign up for the Demo Download products.

Basically, you have to unzip the download file and run SETUP.EXE.  Both the zip file and SETUP have a password and a License Key, respectively, that you need to know.  They are emailed to you automatically when you ask for the demo.

Why doesn't ... ?

Why don't you make the E-Write products available without requiring the License Key to unlock the software?

We expect that, in many situations, our software will be used across a large number of users within a company.  The License Key was the only way we have to be sure each user is properly licensed to use the software.  We are truly sorry for the inconvenience of this.  If your company is interested in a version that does not require a License Key, please email Sales@WestEnterprisesSW.com

Why doesn't E-Write use a standard file format instead of inventing its own?

The only way to get the file size down to its small size was to use a hybrid file architecture.  The file is partly a raster image (like a compressed bitmap) with high resolution vector based color ink appended to each page.  All other, standard, file formats would have been much much larger.

Why doesn't E-Write for Word work in Outlook when it is the email editor?

We have been working on this off and on for two years.  There is a bug in Word when used as the email editor for Outlook.  It precludes us from being able to add the ink to the document.  Microsoft has acknowledged the bug but has not agreed to fix it yet.

Why doesn't the mouse work with E-Write and E-Write for Word?  Why do I have to use a tablet and pen?

The E-Write products use only high resolution input for "inking".  This requires a high resolution pointing device and the Wintab interface or driver for that pointing device.  A mouse just won't do.

Why can't I use E-Write with a color document?

The target for the first E-Write market was simple documents.  We realize that there is another market for full-color documents.  The ability to review and comment on Desktop published documents or Web pages would require "full-color" bitmaps and would change the underlying strategy for our electronic mark-up.  We may do a color product.  Please let us know of your interest and requirements.

Who is ... ?

Who is West anyway

West is Rob West.  He is an old (by computer standards) programmer.  He has been doing software for Windows and digitizers since 1987.  He has worked with a number of manufacturers and now offers some of his software directly to the public via this site.

What is ... ?

A License Key

The License Key is a 20 character "unlock code" that allows the software to work on a certain PC.  License Keys are issued by West Enterprises based on the Product ID

Zip file

A "Zip" file is a highly compressed (shrunk) archive of files. Winzip and Pkzip are two popular utilities that produce zip files. Zip files are commonly used when downloading software because they are smaller and can be transmitted more quickly. Also, zip files provide a way to send many files as one "download file". When unzipped, the downloaded zip file expands out to many files.

Wintab

Wintab is described in: What is Wintab?
